From My Heart
Happy Mother's Day! Today is Mom's special day! Think about it: all you had to do this morning was get up early, get showered and dressed, fix breakfast for everyone, get the kids ready for church, start lunch so everyone can eat again after church, get everyone in the car (without killing one another), and then get everyone back home safely! So really, what is different about today than any other Sunday? Seriously, I hope you have a wonderful day!
Have you ever heard the expression, “by the skin of my teeth?” Actually - it is a Biblical statement found in Job 19:20. Job is complaining to his 3 friends about how terrible his physical condition had become. He had a series of physical ailments which overtook his body and left him completely emaciated. From the description he gives, it is obvious he was reduced to just skin and bones.
This is when he said that he had escaped death, “by the skin of my teeth.” We all know that our teeth do not have skin! The way the Hebrew construction of this statement works, is the “skin” of his body, is doing the same thing as the “skin” of his teeth! Poor ole Job is starving to death because of his illness, and his bones are protruding under his skin. He is basically saying that his skin is falling off. But, by contrast, he infers that his teeth are doing the same thing his skin is doing - falling out!
In the writings of some of the ancient rabbis, who commented on this phrase from the Hebrew Bible, before there even was a King James Version, they put the two “skin” words together and translate the verse to say this, “My bones cling to my skin and my flesh, and I a pulling forth teeth with skin.” They say his “skin” (his flesh) was falling off, probably due to leprosy or a similar disease. So, as he was losing his skin (his flesh) he was also in such bad shape he was losing his teeth as the flesh of his gums were giving way!
Now, that is quite a dramatic scene, and very descriptive…and to be honest… quite gross! So, the King James Bible used the phrase, “the skin of my teeth.” Job was in such terrible condition he felt he would surely die from this disease, and says, “I escaped by the skin of my teeth.” And in 1611, when the King James Bible was published, the famed idiom was born! And it took on the meaning, “barely managing to escape.”
When the KJB was published, every sentence, every word was literally devoured by the English speaking world. The “skin of my teeth” phrase originated with the King James Version of the Bible, but it did not come from the Hebrew text of the Bible. And now, 410 years later, we are still saying, “by the skin of my teeth” to describe how we barely managed to escape something with our lives.
Again, Happy Mother's Day! Have a great day!
